Poem: Shadows

In the outbreak of it all

The shadows hung heavily low;

They terrorised us mortals,

They burnt our homes.

Trapped in the unknown,

We walked for days;

Darkness all around,

We wandered in a haze.

But we soon realised

That darkness was inside.

That we’d mistaken its residence,

We’d been blinded all this time.

We realised us humans

Made a habit of welcoming the dark,

But we clung to the shadows

Because we thought it wouldn’t hurt our hearts.

Eventually we learnt,

The light we started letting in;

In the break of the dawn,

We let the shadows withdraw.

It is said they coexist,

That they peacefully play,

That they’re actually friends,

Constantly reminded by Night and Day.

Not to be feared but to be embraced,

The balance of life is found

In the appreciation of the shades

And the ebbing of wild waves.
